Grown throughout the world in tropical and subtropical climates, the sweet orange (species Citrus x sinensis) as opposed to the bitter orange, is said to have originated in the borders of southern China, northeastern India, and southeastern Asia.  Spanish traders brought the fruit to South America in the 16thC, and now Brazil is the main source of processed orange (mainly Pera variety).
